Iridium Communications, a global leader in voice and data satellite communications, has announced the expanded commercial availability of its Satellite Time and Location (STL) service, a premier alternative for positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) solutions. Responding to growing commercial demand, Iridium partners are now authorized to offer the service in select regions of Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Say Goodbye to GPS Vulnerabilities – Discover Iridium’s Resilient STL Service
Iridium’s expanded Satellite Time and Location (STL) service is a highly secure and resilient alternative to traditional GNSS systems like GPS and Galileo. Designed to combat the growing risks of signal spoofing and jamming, Iridium STL ensures reliable positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) solutions, particularly for critical infrastructure sectors.
This service enhances the resilience of locally critical GNSS systems, such as GPS and Galileo, by providing a signal that is highly resistant to spoofing and jamming, ensuring the reliability of timing systems. Iridium STL delivers global coverage, with additional regions expected to be authorized for commercial use as partners expand and train their sales and support teams.
Iridium STL: Protecting Critical Infrastructure from GNSS Jamming and Spoofing
Europe has experienced a significant increase in GPS jamming and spoofing, with similar activity on the rise in parts of Asia. These attacks pose serious risks to critical infrastructure, including transportation systems, energy grids, data centers, telecommunications networks, and financial services—all of which could benefit from adopting more robust PNT signals like Iridium's STL service.
Broadcasting a signal 1,000 times stronger than GPS, the Iridium® STL service is particularly well-suited for indoor use, eliminating the need for rooftop antennas. This makes it a more secure and cost-effective timing solution for protecting essential systems.
"We're cognizant of the threats facing GNSS-reliant critical infrastructure around the world and our responsibility to deploy the antidote as quickly as possible," said Iridium CEO, Matt Desch.
"The average person is more and more aware of how important systems like GPS are in our day-to-day lives, and when Iridium recently acquired Satelles, I pledged to step on the gas and expand market availability for this increasingly in demand solution. Today's announcement demonstrates that commitment."
Iridium STL solutions are compact, affordable, and simple to install. Leading technology partners producing and distributing STL-capable user equipment are intensifying their efforts to target the growing markets in Europe and Asia. These STL solutions can be seamlessly integrated into existing GNSS-dependent network systems or function as standalone primary units.
With this expansion, Iridium STL is now available for purchase by companies in North America, as well as select regions of Europe and Asia-Pacific. Additional sales support is planned to address growing customer demand in these markets.
