Iridium Communications has announced the launch of Iridium Certus GMDSS, a groundbreaking advancement in maritime satellite communication safety services. As the only truly global GMDSS service, Iridium Certus GMDSS offers distress alert, safety voice, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI) capabilities.
Iridium Certus GMDSS provides unparalleled global safety and connectivity for maritime vessels, offering cost savings, efficiency, and compliance with international safety standards, all through a single, integrated system.
It also includes regulated services such as Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) and the Ship Security Alert System (SSAS), along with the fastest weather-resilient broadband service available, ensuring reliable ship communication even when other systems fail.
Iridium Certus GMDSS: The Only Global Maritime Safety Solution You Need
This comprehensive suite of features delivers a cost-effective and high-performance solution, making Iridium Certus GMDSS the perfect choice for critical connectivity in any ship's hybrid network. By integrating Iridium GMDSS with the advanced capabilities of Iridium Certus, mariners now have access to the most robust communication and safety solution available for maritime operations.
Iridium Certus terminals now provide GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS capabilities through a single, versatile, and reliable antenna, enabling fleets to reduce data costs and simplify their onboard bridge equipment. The Lars Thrane LT-4200S has already achieved the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) wheelmark certification, a significant milestone, and is now available on the market.
Additionally, leading equipment manufacturers such as Cobham Satcom, Intellian, and Thales are expected to roll out a range of Iridium Certus 700 and 200 GMDSS solutions in the coming months.
Revolutionize Maritime Safety and Communication with Iridium Certus GMDSS
Iridium Certus GMDSS, the only satellite GMDSS safety solution offering coverage across every ocean on the planet, also delivers both broadband and midband voice and data services. This flexibility enables mariners to customize their communication solutions to meet the unique demands of their specific situations.
"We're incredibly excited to provide mariners a ready-to-implement service that not only meets industry standards of required safety equipment, but streamlines their overall communications onboard," said Matt Desch, CEO, Iridium.
"As the maritime industry constantly experiences new challenges and desires new advancements in technology, Iridium will continue to develop dependable and robust solutions for the seafarer. With over 25 years of providing life-saving services, we're proud to have a solution such as Iridium Certus GMDSS be on the forefront of that continuous innovation."
SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) class vessels are mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to equip GMDSS systems on board. In an emergency, crew members can activate the red DISTRESS button on an Iridium GMDSS terminal, instantly alerting a Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) with the vessel's position, details, and the nature of the emergency.
Within 30 seconds of the distress alert, the terminal automatically connects to the RCC via Iridium Safety Voice, enabling the crew to quickly provide accurate updates on their situation. By integrating GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS capabilities with companion services for Ku- and Ka-band broadband systems into a single terminal, Iridium delivers unmatched safety, efficiency, and cost savings for hybrid maritime communication systems.
